To mark the centenary of the publication of J. Thomas Looney’s book “Shakespeare” Identified in Edward de Vere the Seventeenth Earl of Oxford, the DVS is holding a weekend Summer Meeting at the Literary & Philosophical Society Library in Newcastle, to include a Society dinner at the nearby Royal Station Hotel on Saturday evening and an optional visit to Alnwick Castle on Sunday. The Lit & Phil Library is a dazzling neo-classical building dating from 1825 that contains a unique collection of over 170,000 books and is the largest independent library outside London. It is also where J. Thomas Looney did the bulk of the research for his book. Guided tour included! See: https://www.litandphil.org.uk/

An optional coach trip to visit Alnwick Castle and the Northumberland Collection and Archive is offered on Sunday. Alnwick Castle was built following the Norman Conquest, is a Grade I listed building, and currently the seat of the 12th Duke of Northumberland and his family, the Percys. It is the second largest inhabited castle in England. Henry Percy (‘Hotspur’) is one of Shakespeare’s best-known characters in Henry IV, Part 1 and the Northumberland Manuscript held in the Archive is extremely important to the SAQ. We are hoping to arrange for an archivist to give a talk to the DVS on the contents of the manuscript and its background. See: https://www.alnwickcastle.com/
